The promise extolled by Sacred Rose about Clearing Tea is that it helps rid the body of unwanted thoughts, feelings, and (on the physical front) detoxifies the colon. The blend's primary goal is to provide cathartic release of stress and trauma and the physical maladies that come with it. If there was ever a month I needed a "tea" like this...it was this one.

The blend included black walnut bark, taheebo, spearmint, sage and rose hips. Taheebo is another name for lapacho (Pau D'arco) - the inner lining of a tree native to Central and South America. I've had it in two different forms before, and found the taste neutral-to-agreeable. It's "technically" wood and tastes like it, but many health properties are associated with it. The other ingredients were known to be on the holistic front except for black walnut bark. No clue what that was there to contribute.

The boldest presence on smell was the spearmint, which often emits an odor like toothpaste. This time - in conjunction with the woodier elements in the batch - it smelled like peppermint. Green leaves dominated the blend's visual array but reddish lapacho strips and rose hips did make their presence known.

Brewing for all Sacred Rose blends called for 1 teaspoon of herb to 1 cup of boiled water with a steep of three-to-five minutes. I was too tired to change things up, so I went with their recommendations to the letter. Generally, with herbals, I would've gone for six minutes, but I wasn't sure of how some of the elements would handle it.

The liquor brewed chestnut brown, which was something I was not expecting at all. I assumed the walnut bark had something to do with that. None of the other elements - even the lapacho - would've resulted in a cup that color. The aroma had several layers; spearmint dialed in first, followed by something equal parts creamy and woody. I had no idea what I was in for and took a precarious sip. A minty note greeted the tongue first, toasty nuttiness followed close behind, and the last passengers off the "flavor bus" were unidentifiably herbacious.

I can say it was a relaxing beverage with a smooth delivery, and that seems to be the case with almost all of Sacred Rose's blends. Some skimp on taste for health properties, but they're all smooth for the most part. This, at least, was smooth and satisfying. Dunno if it did anything cathartic to me, though, other than a sigh of relief with the sip.

Sacred Rose Tea boxes stackedSacred Rose sent me (Lauren) a selection of their hand-blended, organic herbal teas for review, and they’re offering to give away a box of their exquisite Morning Blossom herbal tea to FOUR winners!

First of all, and appearances are important, these teas are gorgeous. Just look at them all boxed up in chocolate brown with satiny pink bows. Who wouldn’t be excited to open a present like that?

Inside, the mixes are clearly top-notch, loose-leaf herbal teas, with identifiable and appetizing dried plants and leaves and a delicious natural fragrance.

Here’s the website’s description followed by my take (and my husband’s) on the four varieties they sent me:

* Mother Earth Zest:

“a refreshing blend of ginger, spearmint, fennel and sage which assists in bringing a sense of fullness and grounding to our lives. This blend aids digestion and helps us root to the earth. Healing to the Root Chakra.”

This tea was very minty & refreshing. Sam said it was “zesty and morning-like,” which was his joke because I said the name (the box wasn’t in front of me) was something like Morning Zest (he’s so helpful). Then he said it was “like Christmas, a sitting-in-front-of-the-fire tea.” I think the Christmas connection must have something to do with the high mint content and the freshness of the ginger. I’m not usually a fan of ginger or mint teas, and yet I really did find this delicious! Go figure.

* Dreamtime:

“a soothing brew of passion flower, skullcap, chamomile and valerian that promotes a deep sense of peace after an overactive day providing a wonderful prelude to a peaceful night’s rest. Opens the Sixth Chakra so one can dream their vision in life while soothing the physical body so one can easily move from insomnia into a well rested sleep.”

This tea was herby looking but very tasty to drink. I could see flower heads in the tea, so it’s hardcore herbal! It smelled delicious, and brewing a cup would be a lovely routine to end the day.

* Matri: Tea of the Mother:

“a delicate blend of nettles, red raspberry, rose hips, alfalfa, dandelion, lemon and ginger that breathes women in birth in the most high and loving way. Matri was created to inspire mothers to be unified with the higher consciousness of the physical, emotional, mental, & spiritual body systems.”

This tea was the most herbal, a little grassy flavored (like you’d imagine herbs steeped in hot water to taste) but pleasant, and it left a green ring around the top of the cup and a lot of green “soot” in the bottom of the cup. What I liked was how specifically they chose the herbs that assist in preparing for childbirth and guiding through it. I’d heard of the benefits of some of these herbs, but I looked them all up individually to make sure there were no contraindications to using them in the second trimester of pregnancy. There were a lot of mixed messages — for instance, Childbirth Solutions and Herbal Gardens gave a go on everything, but American Pregnancy noted that some types of parts of nettles could be on the Likely Unsafe list for the Natural Medicines Database, and that dandelions have insufficient data available. Some of the confusion is due to the fact that not a lot of scientific research has been done into herbal medicine, and there are differences between eating an herb (and what part you eat), taking a high-dose tincture, and drinking a (diluted) cup of tea. I took this compromising route: I determined one cup of tea now wouldn’t hurt me, and I’d save the rest of the box till my third trimester, where it will do the most good and since I’d hate to use it up before then, anyway. I don’t want to advise anyone in a medical fashion who’s pregnant, so check with your midwife or doctor about what’s recommended for you. Just researching those herbs convinced me personally that these herbs have very specific and helpful benefits during pregnancy and birth. (And stay tuned for a future giveaway of the Matri tea!)

* Morning Blossom:

“an invigorating blend of peppermint, spearmint, rose, ginger and alfalfa that encourages motivation and joyful experiences. On the physical level Morning Blossom assists the respiratory system and metaphysically it opens the Heart Chakra to a reciprocal balance of giving and receiving self, romantic and planetary love.”

This is the kind you could win, and I’m so excited about that! I wasn’t joking when I called it exquisite. I really love this tea! Remember how I said I wasn’t normally a huge fan of mint and ginger teas? Maybe I’m lying, because this has two types of mint plus ginger, but I think it’s absolutely delicious. It even has miniature rosebuds in it, which makes it adorably pretty and would make it a good gift tea. (Think ahead to Mother’s Day, weddings, and baby showers, for instance!) I like a lot of teas, but I had three all-time favorites — and now I have four.

I have to admit, the descriptions of the teas kind of make me giggle (especially Beloved: The Twin Souls, because I’m immature). I’m crunchy, too, but I still get a kick out of reading some of the language on the site and in the literature they sent me. I don’t always drink my tea so spiritually, but the good news is — if you do, the spiritual vibrations are there for you!

“Sacred Rose® Organic Herbal Teas are blended to hold specific patterns of light frequency. … Sacred Rose® Organic Herbal Tea is enthusiastic about raising the vibrational frequency of humanity one cup of tea at a time. … Sacred Rose® Organic Herbal Teas stimulate the energy body’s innate ability to heal. Each Sacred Rose® blend facilitates an inner alchemy within the matrix of the body mind opening the gateway for a change in consciousness.”

I just want to speak to anyone who might be uncomfortable with the vibrations language that the tea tastes good, too! And the herbs are effective whether you believe in them or not.

One downside is that this tea is pretty pricey if you’re not used to organic and specialty blends: $18 for a box, plus shipping. It’s definitely a tea for connoisseurs! I want to share Morning Blossom with my friends, so I’m planning to order some more boxes, anyway. I’m a big believer in the benefits of tea and effective herbs, and the quality of loose-leaf varieties. I like that this is an artisanal drink from a small company.

Soul of the Rose from Sacred Rose I have to say that Sacred Rose Herbal Teas are probably the most unique and interesting teas I’ve seen in all my years of reviewing teas. They only have (at the time of this review) eight custom hand-blended teas, but the quality, preparation and packaging of these teas is what sets them apart from the rest.

First let me tell you a little about this one-of-a-kind company and how they prepare their teas. I can completely appreciate all the effort and thought they put into their teas, not only as a tea lover and tea reviewer, but also as a woman who appreciates herbal tisanes with an metaphysical quality.

I recently spoke with Maria Pologeorgis, the owner of Sacred Rose® about her company, and we spoke at some length about this particular blend, which is geared towards your emotions and spirit as much as your body. We discussed how a tea can assist with an ‘emotional cleansing’, if you will, as well as the herbs helping your physical being*, and this particular tea is geared toward intimate healing of the soul. It focuses on the rose, which has been symbolic of the feminine since ancient times. This tea encourages you to embrace your feminine self! I was very impressed with the amount of love and energy Maria has put into Sacred Rose®.

Personally speaking, I fully appreciate all the time, preparation and effort they put into to creating their tea blends. What an incredible tea company!! Now let me tell you a little about this specific tea blend they’ve created…what might be considered their “house blend”, Soul of the Rose.

The first thing that struck me immediately about Sacred Rose teas is their packaging. Never have I seen such elegant packaging for teas. They arrive in a GORGEOUS, high quality beautiful brown box which is tied with a gorgeous, thick silken pink ribbon. Inside the box, the teas are packaged in a cellophane packaging. The only downside to this is storage of the tea.

Ideally, teas of any kind should be stored in an air-tight, opaque (light-free) environment so as to retain flavor and aroma for as long as possible. For this reason, even though the teas arrive in the most gorgeous and elegant of packaging, I would recommend transferring the tea to a tea canister or other air-tight jar when you open the internal packaging to use the tea. You will be keeping the beautiful pink and brown boxes they come in though, they are perfect for storing treasures!

Sacred Rose describes this tea as:

Soul of the Rose® – a sensual blend of cloves, alfalfa, rose hips and pink rose buds which transmutes trauma into peace and joy and is especially beneficial to survivors of sexual abuse. This blend is especially therapeutic with Sacral Chakra issues.

Soul of the Rose® balances the yin yang of the bodymind as it assists the sensual body: taste, touch, smell, sight to open to more intimate levels of healing.

In the times of the Goddess, cryptic symbols were utilized to direct lost souls on the path of consciousness. The Rose is one of those symbols.

The Rose is symbolic of sacred female sexuality. In ancient Goddess culture, the five-petal Rose represents the five phases of female life: birth, menstruation, motherhood, menopause, and death.

The Rose is also an anagram for Eros, the Greek God of sexual love. Rose and Eros unified are Hieros Gamos, sacred marriage.

The blossoming Rose personifies the blessed womb.

Soul of the Rose® is a delicate and joyful Sacred Rose® Organic Herbal Blend of cloves, alfalfa, rose hips, and pink rose buds. It facilitates trauma into peace and joy and is especially beneficial for survivors of sexual abuse.

This tea smells and looks so inviting and lovely! If you love roses, or floral teas, this is an absolute must-have tea. I’ve never seen anything quite like it! The majority of the tea is dried green alfalfa, which makes this tea have a little bit of “dust” in it, but it only intensifies the fragrance. The alfalfa is a lovely, light and smooth base for this tea. It has a smooth grassy flavor that is naturally sweet and compliments the rose flavors perfectly.

Alfalfa is also a folk remedy* for arthritis, diabetes, asthma, hay fever, and is alleged to be a good appetite stimulant and overall tonic. It is a good source of minerals, chlorophyll, vitamins and is is high in chlorophyll. The leaves contain eight essential amino acids. It has proven itself to be a good laxative and a natural diuretic. It is useful in the treatment of urinary tract infections, kidney, bladder and prostrate disorders. It alkalizes and detoxifies the body, especially the liver. Alfalfa promotes pituitary gland function and contains an anti-fungus agent.

Along with the alfalfa base, this tea also contains plenty of roses, as you might imagine. The rose flavor is very prominent, as is the aroma of fresh pink roses. The rosebuds, rose petals and rose hips make this tea an exquisitely rose flavored tea. Very floral, and very feminine! And along with the roses and alfalfa are cloves, which add a warmth and spiciness to the background of the tea, and give it a little added “zing”.

I won’t lie, this tea is 100% floral, and all roses and femininity. If you hate heavy florals, you might look elsewhere, but if you enjoy floral teas, and roses, give this one a try! Sacred Rose took the idea of a “rose tea” then infused it with light vibrations and crystals to make it into a tisane that is perfect for a woman’s mind and spirit.
